Vetoprime EP490 is a universal primer for the Vetorep and Vetotop Coatings product range. It is applied on prepared concrete and cementitious substrates to seal the substrate enhance bonding with topcoats. The product can be used as a stand-alone product in internal applications as a seal coat to harden cementitious surfaces and prevent dusting. Vetoprime EP490 is a two-component solvent-based epoxy resin that has penetrating properties making it ideal for concrete substrates.

Description

Uses of Universal Primer

  • As a universal versatile primer for resinous
    flooring and concrete repair systems.
  • As a stand-alone sealer and surface hardener.
  • As a dust proofer for cementitious surfaces.
  • Sealing of semi-porous cementitious substrates.

Advantages of Vetoprime EP490

  • Easily applied by brush, roller or spray.
  • Versatile with applications in a large number of
    coating materials and sealants.
  • Deep penetration, designed for semi porous
    surfaces.
  • High wetting properties.
  • Cost effective, suitable for use in MENA region
    conditions.

HOW TO USE Universal Primer

Surface Preparation: Preparation:

For optimal bond strength between the substrate and coating/repair products, apply Vetoprime EP490 to a surface that is sound, clean, and dry.

Concrete Substrates:

Ensure that the concrete substrate is at least 28 days old, and the relative humidity is 75% or below. To remove laitance deposits on new concrete, consider light grit blasting, mechanical scrabbling, or grinding.

In cases of heavy contamination by oil and grease or the presence of existing coatings, thoroughly eliminate all contaminants.

Limitations: The cure rate of Vetoprime EP490 varies with temperature conditions. At temperatures below 20ºC, the curing process will be slower. Conversely, temperatures above 20ºC will result in a faster cure rate.

General Applications

  • Priming of joint edges to receive urethane, epoxy,
    and polyurea based sealants.
  • Priming of concrete slabs and walls to receive
solvent free epoxy, urethane, MMA, polyurea and
    hybrid coatings.
  • Priming of concrete substrates to receive epoxy and
    urethane based repair mortars.
  • Priming of cementitious screeds to receive epoxy,
    urethane and resinous coatings.

Note: At temperatures below 20oC, the cure rate will
be slower. Conversely, at temperatures above 20oC, the
cure rate will be faster.

Surface Preparation

Vetoprime EP490 must be applied to a sound, clean
and dry surface to achieve maximum bond strength
between substrate and coating/repair products.

Concrete Substrates

It should be at least 28 days old, and the relative
humidity of the concrete is 75% or below. Laitance
deposits on new concrete are best removed by light
grit blasting, mechanical scrabbling, or grinding.
Where heavy contamination by oil and grease has
occurred or existing coatings are present, remove all
contaminations.

Priming

Mix Vetoprime EP490 as supplied. Add the entire
content of the hardener container to the base
container and mix thoroughly for about 2 minutes.
Once mixed, apply Vetoprime EP490 immediately in a
thin continuous film using stiff brushes or rollers. Avoid
over-application and puddles.
Allow Vetoprime EP490 to become tack-free before
applying the epoxy coating (unless otherwise
specified) but well within the open time specified for
the given temperature.
The hotter the substrate, the more quickly the primer
will become dry.

Cleaning

Clean all tools and equipment immediately after use
with Vetonit Solvent XX400.

Shelf Life & Storage

The original Vetoprime EP490 sealed container has
a shelf life of 12 months, provided it is stored clear of
ground in a dry, shaded place below 35oC.

Health & Safety

Some people are sensitive to epoxy resins, so gloves
and a barrier cream shall be used when handling these
products. If contact with the resin occurs, it must be
removed before it hardens, with resin removing cream
follow by washing with soap and water. Do not use
solvent.
During use, avoid inhalation of solvent and contact with
skin and eyes. Wear suitable protective clothing, gloves,
eye protection, and respiratory protective equipment.
In case of contact with the eye, rinse immediately
with plenty of clean water and seek medical advice. If
swallowed, seek medical attention immediately – do
not induce vomiting.
Vetoprime EP490 is flammable. Ensure adequate
ventilation. Do not smoke or use near a naked flame.
Refer to Material Safety Data Sheet for further
information.
